Costa Rica land of dreams

Costa Rica, a journey through history, rainforest, and wildlife

“If you ever dreamed to experience Indiana Jones’ adventures, but without risking your life, come to Costa Rica, you won’t regret it!”.

This trip was absolutely a life-changing experience! For a moment, I have to confess, I wanted to move over there and start a new life away from pollution, stress, bills, and so on… but you know, going on a holiday it’s different than living everyday life.

Introduction

When you are going to plan your holiday bear in mind that according to the season you are going to have a different kind of holiday, each one with pros and cons.

First of all, wintertime is from May to October and summer is from November to April.

December to March is considered high season, so higher prices and is more a beach holiday. May to August is more about nature, visiting national parks and beaches as well (weather is still ok not too hot, perfect for European people). It rains almost every night but every morning you will see the sun again. During their summertime, the temperature is very hot and the dry season implies no rain, which is great if you want to relax on the beach but not so good if you want to see waterfalls, green landscapes and photograph wildlife. So decide which kind of holiday you want to have and plan it accordingly. I went the last 3 weeks of July and it was great, not too busy, cheap hotels and amazing excursions.

During September and October, it rains a lot every day, shops, restaurants, and hotels are closed. It is a different experience, fewer people around, everything is peaceful and feels cosier.

My journey started in London from Gatwick airport and continued for 12 hours on the flight to San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica. As always I and my girlfriend decided to move around and visit most of the country or as much as we could…

We had a lot of fun, met amazing people and experienced some interesting, funny adventures…

As a European citizen, you won’t need any visa or vaccination but always double-check online, just to make sure this is your case as the situation changes according to the country.

Below I gonna list all the places we visited so if you are thinking to visit Costa Rica you can get inspired. Please feel free to drop me few lines and ask any questions.

  • San Josè;
  • Braulio Carillo National Park;
  • La Paz waterfall gardens;
  • La Fortuna – Arenal National Park;
  • Tortuguero National Park;
  • Rio celeste;
  • Tambor;
  • Santa Teresa – Nicoya peninsula;
  • Montezuma waterfalls;
  • Malpais;

Bear in mind 3 weeks are not enough to see the whole country, so you have to make a selection and leave something for the next time… anyway I will tell you what I would have liked to see if I had enough time.

San Josè

San Josè is the capital of Costa Rica, from the airport you can reach the city center within an hour by taxi (depending on the time of the day and traffic), just make sure you take an official taxi and not a private one. It is a safe city if you behave properly and smart. The city is nice but nothing exceptional, the city center is similar to any European city but as soon as you move away from it you can see the poverty around you. Public transport is almost inexistent, due to volcanic activity in the region, it’s impossible to develop any railway, so you have to move around by bus or internal flight. I would say a couple of days in San Josè are enough to see everything with no rush. We stayed in a hotel very close to the city center and even if the surrounding area didn’t look great, we never had any problem and all the people we met were very nice and friendly. I want to mention the hotel because the staff was great, the room was massive and clean, within 20 minutes walking from the city center, breakfast included, free WiFi, free parking, they changed our money in local currency and explained how it works when you pay in dollars or local currency and we paid $45 total for 2 nights for 2 people!

Costa Rica Guesthouse: Avenida 6, Calle 21 & 25, San José, 01001, Costa Rica – Phone: +506 2223

national-museum-mask

Boruca mask, Costa Rica National Museum – San Josè.

Based on the location of our hotel, on the very first day we started with the Costa Rica National Museum for a full immersion experience in this beautiful culture (if you choose the Costa Rica Guesthouse is 10 min walking), here you gonna need a 24-70 f2.8 lens and maybe a telephoto for detailed pictures, but tripod and flash are not allowed. Please allow yourself at least 3 hours to see the whole museum, it is beautiful!

national-museum-cart

Ox Cart or Carreta in Siquirres, Costa Rica National Museum – San Josè.

Continuing on the Avenida Central you can visit the Jade Museum and then the Teatro National de Costa Rica, which is really nice and not too expensive. A guided tour is included in the ticket, once the tour is finished you are free to go around and admire this beautiful theater. From the photography point of view I would take a 24-70 f2.8 wide lens, fast enough to take decent pictures, ideally, you would need a tripod but inside is not allowed, so maybe take a small one to fit in your backpack in case you have the chance to use it.

Just outside the theatre you can relax and take pictures of street artists in the Plaza de la Cultura. This is a good place to look for a local sim card or anything else you might need. We spent the afternoon and the early evening in the Central market where, if you eat local food, you can have lunch for $16 total for 2 people, soft drinks included. This is something you need to remember if you behave like a local, you gonna save a lot of money, if you start going to tourist restaurants and bars you gonna spend a lot, this country can be very cheap and surprisingly very expensive.

We ended the day in a bar on Avenida central for a well-deserved cocktail on a balcony on the first floor facing the main street, really good atmosphere and relaxing with some music.

The day after we went to La Sabana park because our car rental shop was just outside the park. To be honest with you the park is nothing special but once you are there it is worth a shot, plus there is a really nice museum, free entry, just at the entrance, Costa Rican Art Museum. Inside the park, there is a football stadium, which was closed so we couldn’t visit.

This was our last day in San Josè the end of our journey but also the beginning of a new one, the real Costa Rica. We picked up the car and lead it to Braulio Carillo National Park.

In this part of the country, the roads are in really good condition, people drive safely (on youtube I heard some scary stories… but my experience was nothing like that).

There are other things to see in San Josè like the Pre Columbian gold museum, the Spyrogira butterfly garden, and the Simon Bolivar parque zoologico, but we didn’t go because of the time, we planned to leave San Josè in the afternoon in order to be at the park by 6 pm, take the room and start with the first excursion, night frog observation!

Braulio Carrillo National Park

From San Josè we reached Braulio Carillo National Park within a couple of hours’ drive, so not bad…

First of all please book the hotel in the Tapirus Lodge. You gonna sleep in the middle of the forest, every morning and evening there is a free walk around the area included in the price (a great way to start and end your day at the Tapirus Lodge), all the excursions will begin from the restaurant area (less than 3 minutes walk) and most important you gonna park the car and forget it for the following 3 days. This is the perfect amount of time you will need in this park, maybe more but not less.

Tapirus lodge

The Tapirus lodge is a bit expensive compared to the rest of the hotels we booked but believe me it is a great experience, once you see the pictures on their website you will fall in love immediately. The staff is great and all the excursions they offer are a must:

1. Rainforest hike, good shoes, raincoats, and insect repellents are a must. During this excursion, you gonna walk into the jungle, swim into the river and travel on the aerial tram (a must). Since you start you gonna love it. I would say take any equipment you have with you, macro, wide, telephoto lenses, filters, tripod and whatever you have, but you gonna walk the whole day in the forest and often you gonna have to climb or go down a path, moreover, the forest has a microclimate that according to the season you visit can be very dry or rainy, so use your judgment, but based on my experience, a wide-angle, telephoto and flash are absolutely indispensable.

braulio-carillo-forest

Rainforest hike excursion – Tapirus Lodge.

Also if you visit during the rainy season take a rain cover for your camera, when I came back home I was soaking wet, even my pants were soggy… Halfway you gonna have lunch (provided by them) along the river, take the opportunity to swim, relax and take some beautiful pictures, long exposure if you took a small tripod (a large one could be bulky and heavy considering you gonna have to walk a lot).

braulio-carillo-river

Rainforest hike excursion – Tapirus Lodge.

While on the aerial tram my girlfriend asked how to behave in the forest and what to do if we would have met a snake, great question I would say… Our guide explained to us to follow his steps and don’t touch anything because “you never know who you gonna wake up“. Long story short, there is a very poisonous snake, the bushmaster, if he bites you it’s better to get the antidote within 3 hours, but no worries the guide can call a helicopter and you will be in the hospital in 15 minutes…

At the end of the day, staff will welcome you back with a nice cup of coffee, a cake, and a big smile.

Without any doubt one of the best experiences in my life, I will never forget it and I will do it again if I will ever go back, fantastic!

2. Canopy tour. One of the reasons I suggested you stay at the Tapirus Lodge is that when you are their guest this excursion includes 4 extra tracks, much longer, higher, and speedy than the regular one that you would do as an external visitor. Anyway, you gonna join a larger group (external and home visitors) so please book in advance, better if you do it from home before you go to Costa Rica, moreover if you go during the high season.

It is very funny and you will want to do it anyway so why not book in advance?

Unfortunately, you can’t take your camera or phone with you for safety reasons (agreed), but you have the chance to rent a helmet with a camera and record anything you want, and every time I watch those videos I relive that amazing experience and laugh a lot because most of the time I got stuck halfway and I see my girlfriend mocking me…

3. Night frog observation. It’s not a must-do experience but it’s very cheap and it takes place in the evening so we did it the very first day we arrived, after we got the room and relaxed a little bit (well planned). Without the guide I would never have seen the frogs on my own, he knew what to listen to and where to look for them.

During this excursion, you will need a tripod, macro lens, and a torch. Don’t use the flash because you gonna disturb the frogs, and one of the first rules in photography is to respect your subject! With a torch, you can light your subject to get the right focus and then using the tripod you can take nice pictures.

Night frog observation – Tapirus Lodge

When you book you will have the chance to choose the optional dinner, I did it and I did not regret it.

This excursion takes place within the Tapirus lodge area, so you don’t have to walk a lot, it’s very relaxing and interesting, after all, I would definitely recommend it.

Guided Morning and evening walks take place every day and is included in the price of the room, I recommend you to do it at least once, the morning walk is really good for birdwatching (take a telephoto lens, tripod, and a wide-angle) and the evening one for frogs.

La Paz Waterfalls gardens

Waterfall gardens

The La Paz waterfall gardens are more like a zoo, nevertheless are a must. There is free parking, a hotel (very expensive) and a restaurant so if you can spend the whole day in here, come when they open and enjoy this amazing place. On the way to reach this park, you will have great opportunities to take fantastic pictures, especially when you get close to the park entrance there is a little “shop” (it’s more like a shack), in the left corner right in front of the waterfall, very typical and characteristic, you can stop to take some pictures of the waterfall before you enter the park (2 minutes away by car).

la-paz-kiosk

Street vendor before the La Paz waterfall garden entrance.

Inside the park I would use a tripod telephoto and wide-angle lens, you might need some ND filters for the waterfalls, but please use the flash just for plants and flowers as animals can get scared by flash, plus I think is forbidden.

Once inside the first thing you gonna see is hummingbirds, they are very difficult to photograph because they move very quickly and they don’t stand still for long, so autofocus doesn’t really work. The best thing to do is pre-focus on a certain area (where they feed) and shot when they reach your focus area, you gonna need a tripod in order to shot at high speed and keep the subject in focus.

la-paz-hummingbird

Hummingbird – La Paz waterfalls park.

Going down the park you gonna walk through a tucan’s cage, pass by monkeys, parrots, ducks, jaguars until you reach a really nice cottage where they serve really nice tea and typical costarican cake.

When you photograph through the cage remember a little trick, to make the cage disappear you need to have a certain distance between the subject and the net.

You have plenty of time and space so relax, use the tripod and take your best pictures, try to catch animals’ expressions as they behave like humans.

la-paz-jaguar

Jaguar – La Paz waterfalls park.

Last but not least go to the waterfalls, start from the top one and go down until the end where you can rest and relax at the bar, while you wait for the free shuttle to go back to the entrance, pick up your car and drive towards the next destination.

la-paz-waterfall

La Paz waterfalls park.

This part of the park offers more opportunities for landscape photography with really nice spots to photograph waterfalls. Down the path you can detour through the bush and get closer to the waterfalls, some of them are more suitable for long exposure shots others for selfies, just remember the rocks are slippery so be careful when you walk.

Once we left the waterfall gardens we stayed at the Hotel El Tucano Resort & Thermal Spa, very nice and cheap, with a swimming pool or natural warm water coming from a nearby volcano.

Very close to the Juan Castro Blanco National Park, which was in our plan but we couldn’t visit because all the roads were closed due to a protest. Also halfway to the next location, The Arenal National Park.

Arenal National Park

The Arenal is an active volcano in the northwest of Costa Rica, is very famous for its photogenic perfectly cone shape. During this time we stayed at the Arenal Hostel Resort (Fortuna, 44170, Costa Rica), perfectly located on the main street of La Fortuna a little town close to the Arenal. it’s quite cozy, with free parking, pool, WiFi and

arenal national park volcano

Arenal National park volcano.

The ticket for the Arenal National park includes 2 sites, the park with the volcano and the other side with the lake (2 different entrances). To be honest with you I preferred the part with the lake, also because to take nice pictures of the volcano you need a clear sky, and guess what I got a cloudy day… so I couldn’t take a clear picture of the volcano. The park itself is quite nice, there are 2 different paths which you can do both in less than 3 hours, one of them leads to this huge tree with gigantic roots taller than a man.

arenal-danger-board

Arenal National park.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t climb the volcano because is still active so it could be dangerous, the whole area around the volcano is quite nice but nothing exceptional, anyway it is worth a shot.

For this trip I suggest you bring a telephoto lens and a wide-angle, flash and tripod are not really necessary, anyway, the parking is inside the park and it’s a very easy walking so feel free to carry anything you like.

Tortuguero Natural Reserve

Arenal to the Tortuguero was quite a long journey, I really recommend you to travel with the daylight, I don’t have any sight problem but I really struggled to drive in the evening to the Tortuguero area due to the lack of street lighting.

tortuguero-park

Tortuguero Natural Reserve.

The Tortuguero National Park is accessible only via boat from La Pavona. You can park the car in this huge parking, 10 USD for the whole day, it’s safe and very well organized. There is a restaurant where you can have breakfast or lunch and book some excursions in the meantime. Just outside the parking, there is a “wharf” (very generous definition), where you can board a private boat to reach the Tortuguero:

Depart Pavona 7:30 am, 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, 4:30 pm;

Depart Tortuguero 5:30 am, 9:00 am, 11:00 am, 3:00 pm;

The journey is roughly one hour long so try to use the toilet before because there is literally no place to stop… The price for the parking and the boat is reasonable. I strongly recommend you to spend at least one night in the Tortuguero National Park because there are some activities that you can only do in the night-time, so many in the daytime and you also want to spend some time on the beach, moreover, the time to reach the park between car and boat (both ways) is too much to do it in one day.

You can stay at the Casa Marbella often mentioned as a really nice place to stay when visiting the Tortuguero National Park.

As most people suggested the first activity we did was a canoe trip around the park with a local guide. In the early morning is not that busy and you can really enjoy the experience, is peaceful and the less boat are around the more chance to spot wildlife you have, that’s why everybody suggests to do it first as you get there.

tortuguero-boat-tour

Tortuguero Natural Reserve boat excursion.

Everything was great, Mr. Antonio explained to us the history of the Tortuguero, the local fauna behavior and shared some insight about respecting flora and fauna because everyone lives together in a sort of magical harmony. He was very respectful and kind, it was a very entertaining experience and Antonio was always spotting a cayman here, a bird there an iguana over there…

tortuguero national park monkey

Tortuguero Natural Reserve.

After the canoe trip, we went for a short walk through the village, in order to reach the entrance of the jungle and start a jaguar chasing adventure, even if we ended up walking among monkeys, iguanas, spiders, and giant ants, we didn’t spot any jaguar, and after all, I think it was better and safer…

tortuguero national park iguana

Tortuguero Natural Reserve.

We had lunch in a local restaurant with a sea view, very nice food and a reasonable price. From the photography point of view, you gonna need a telephoto lens 200-500mm for the trip on the canoe, you can also take a monopod or small tripod to hold the lens still. This lens is kind of necessary because on the canoe you will be far from your subject and the 200mm minimum focal length gives you enough flexibility to take pictures from close. In the park, a wide-angle lens like 24-70mm will make most of the job, even if sometimes you gonna have to switch the lens to take pictures of the wildlife, like monkeys on the trees, iguanas, and jaguars if you are lucky enough to spot one. If you stay overnight don’t forget a fast lens to take pictures in the nighttime on the beach. Filter wise you can obviously take the usual stuff, polarising, UV, ND, etc… but I didn’t use any.

Rio Celeste

Celeste River is a river in Tenorio Volcano National Park of Costa Rica, situated north of the Arenal national park (not far away). Its main characteristic is a river of turquoise coloration. The river’s distinctive turquoise color is not due to a chemical species but to a physical phenomenon known as Mie scattering. The Tenorio park has 2 main trails, one leads to a big waterfall and one to the Rio Celeste. Before you go down there take a picture from the top of the stairs using a zoom wide-angle lens, a 24-70 will serve the purpose. Try to use a tripod because the area is always crowded and taking multiple pictures will allow you in post-production to eliminate all the tourists from the picture.

rio-celeste-waterfall stairs

Rio Celeste waterfalls.

Once you reach the waterfall an ultra-wide-angle lens (I used a Zeiss 15mm) will allow you to frame the whole scene without missing any detail of the scenario. Again try to use a tripod because it will allow you to use an ND filter to reproduce a silk effect with the water and the clouds.

rio-celeste-waterfall

Rio Celeste waterfalls.

Once you leave the waterfall area you will start the trail that leads to the Rio Celeste. I recommend you to use a 24-70mm lens to take advantage of its flexibility, mostly there are landscape pictures to take and macro if you wish but to be honest I didn’t see any wildlife around (probably because of tourists). The trail offers you many photo opportunities, a tripod and ND filters are strongly recommended but if you are willing to take the extra weight a macro lens would be very useful.

rio-celeste-river

Rio Celeste.

I would recommend you to visit the Tenorio park in the morning, the hiking isn’t very difficult and it takes 5 hours the most but if you start early you can then spend more time relaxing in the different spots. It is definitely worth paying a visit to Rio Celeste, there is huge and cheap parking at the entrance, the tickets are available at the ticket office and very important DRONES ARE NOT ALLOWED, I don’t know why but they searched my backpack for this reason.

Tambor

Sadly at the end of the day, we left the Tortuguero National Park and returned to our hotel. The day after in the early morning we returned to San Josè airport (2,5 hours driving) and returned the car. From San Josè airport we got a domestic flight to Tambor, the closest airport to Playa Hermosa in the Nicoya peninsula. The best company to fly to Tambor is Sansa (click to open link). Try to book your flight in advance, first of all, because it might be cheaper and also because the plane can hold up to 12 people, so if you flight at a busy time you might struggle to find a place. There are few flights per day and you must be at the check-in at least one hour in advance, otherwise, they reserve the right to give up your place to someone else. Very important, bear in mind that this is a small plane and the luggage allowance is smaller than bigger planes, so most probably you gonna have to pay for the extra weight (fortunately not very expensive, we paid 30 USD for both luggage extra weight). The flight time is just 25 minutes but it can be very exciting… when you land in Tambor you can see the landing track in the middle of a mountain with the pilot aiming at the center, you will fly over a beautiful landscape so get your camera ready!

Playa Hermosa – Nicoya Peninsula

The Playa Hermosa is situated in Santa Teresa de Puntarenas in Cobano, southwest of the Nicoya Peninsula on the Pacific Ocean side of Costa Rica, about an hour drive from Tambor airport.

It is a beautiful uncontaminated beach great for surfing, relaxing, and at the same time a great location for excursions. We stayed at Batik, a complex of beach villas for 10 days, I really recommend you this place because the villas are amazing, you stay a 5-minute walk from the beach and a 10-minute drive from the main village.

Antonio, the main manager, is absolutely amazing, he speaks English, Italian and Spanish, he can arrange excursions for you, give you great tips about the local area, arrange a taxi, book a restaurant, rent a quad and sort out any request you might have, he is very kind and generous, if our stay in here was so great it was also because of him. The area around the villas is very nice but the roads are inexistent, you must have a 4×4 car or as we did, rent a quad (through Antonio). If you drive a quad remember to take a scarf to protect you from the dust.

Logs resting on Hermosa beach.

During our holiday in Santa Teresa we spent our time between excursions (all booked through Antonio) and the beach, Antonio can also arrange surfing lessons if you want… Here is the list of our excursions which I think you really have to do:

Horse riding. I have done this before but this time was unique, maybe because it was between the seaside and forest or maybe because no one was telling me to follow his lead, don’t run or stay online, this time I felt free, I really enjoyed it and didn’t get bored after the first hour. Moreover, they let me ride a horse and not a donkey… You book for as many people as you want, you are not gonna join a big group of people, so is just you and the guide.

Isla Tortuga. For this excursion, the tour operator will pick you up from Batik (or your hotel) around 8.00 am and drive you to Montezuma, where the trip starts. The Montezuma village is very nice and you can tell that tourism is the main business, there are restaurants and cafes that you can visit for a quick breakfast before you start your excursion. If you are lucky enough during the trip to Tortuga Island you can spot dolphins and whales during their migration (depending on the period you visit), staff will spot them for you and chase them so you can take pictures, just get ready with your camera, set it to high shutter speed and autofocus.

Drinks will be served on the boat for free no limits! Before they drop you on the island you gonna have fun snorkeling for an hour or so, if you have underwater equipment take it with you because all fish are beautifully colored and abundant and you can take amazing pictures or, as I did, just enjoyed the experience. Once on the island, lunch will be served (amazing), afterward, you are free to relax on the beach or explore the island with a guide (paying).

isla tortuga palms and beach

By 4 pm you gonna head back to Montezuma where your minivan will take you back to your hotel. Overall this was one of the best excursions in the Nicoya Peninsula, it was worth every single penny. Check the tour operator website for more information and pictures: Zouma tours

Cabo Blanco Natural reserve. The park entrance is on the east side of the peninsula, but no worries, it took us 1 hour by quad from batik. I would recommend you to be there for the opening time to make the most of it and avoid the heat (at the least while going there). On your way, you can stop for breakfast at the Zwart art cafe, an art gallery/breakfast club, a very nice breakfast, and very nice paintings. The entrance fee at the park is 12$ pp, you can pay by card, dollars or colones. The staff is very nice and helpful but they only speak Spanish.

quad excursion montezuma

There are 2 trails for hiking, a short one (2 miles) and a long one (6 miles), in both cases wear comfortable shoes, a swimming suit, take some water with you (double than what you think if you go in their summertime) and try not to overload your backpack, so think carefully which gear you want to take with you. Personally, I took a 24-70 and a 28-300 with a flash, no tripod. The trails are not very difficult but it helps to be in a good shape. For more information visit the website: Cabo Blanco Natural Reserve

Montezuma waterfalls park

One of the biggest attractions of the Nicoya Peninsula is the Montezuma waterfalls. It is made of 3 falls, a beautiful area that allows you to swim (in some of them), hike, and spend a wonderful day with your family. The top one is only 5 meters tall but it is the best to swim. The middle waterfall is 12 meters tall, you can take nice pictures from the top, and if you dare, jump, just without the camera… Jokes aside it is a beautiful view and although some people jump in the pool underneath I would not recommend you to do so, it’s dangerous and there had been accidents. The Lower Waterfall is the biggest at about 25 meters and also the most visited, with a nice pool to chill out.

There are 2 ways to access the waterfalls, the Riverbed Trail and the Canopy Tour Trail. We use the first one which is beside a restaurant, where we parked the quad ($2), and the easiest access if you are interested only in the lower waterfall (anyway we visited all of them and it is worth the hike). If you dare, take a tripod and ND filters you gonna take beautiful pictures, the hike is not too hard and you can afford some extra weight. I brought with me a 24-70 and 70-200 but just a wide-angle lens will do the job. During the hiking there are astonishing spots to take great pictures, always take your time, look around and stop for a minute, you will see something to photograph.

Malpais and Playa Carmen

Malpais is a fisherman village and It spans roughly 6 kilometers of coastline, from Playa Carmen south to the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, with its seductive waves it is a paradise for surfers. Playa Carmen is a beautiful beach next to Santa Teresa. There is no real excursion but I strongly recommend you pay a visit. Photography-wise, the opportunities to take amazing shots are endless, you can witness spectacular sunrise and sunset, chase wildlife, admire stars, have fun with ND filters when photographing waterfalls, rivers, and the ocean. If you wake up very early you can also photograph surfers just outside your villa for your sports portfolio. Living in the Batik villas gives you the opportunity to organize your photography excursions very well so you can plan your day according to your “photo target”.

Conclusion

Costa Rica has been a surprisingly beautiful country with kind, inspiring, and great people surrounded by vibrant, colorful, and wild nature. The rainforest was particularly a great experience with very strong feelings. I always loved documentaries about the Amazon forest and wildlife, because they showed a world so far and completely different from the reality we live in big cities, they always represented the only way to know and see these remote places. Everything lives in a perfect balance, each one does its part, living together, with strict and cruel rules that somehow work better than ours. In Costa Rica people have learned to be part of nature, respect any kind of life, and it’s something that I envy them, here in the “civil world” we do horrible things to each other every day. If you love nature, colorful and wild animals, Costa Rica is the perfect holiday for you. It wasn’t very difficult to arrange it, all the information is available online. On the other hand, transportation is a big problem. There is no railway due to the volcanic activity and there are only a few main roads (well maintained), so a car is a must. When you want to cover bigger distances there are domestic flights in small planes. Everything works out if you really want. This is the end of my story, it has been a fantastic holiday, a life-changing experience that I will remember and carry in my heart forever. If I will ever have a chance, I will definitely go back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use public transport to move around the country?

NO, due to seismic activity, there is no railway network, so the only way to move around the country is via car, boat of domestic flights.

What is the currency used in Costa Rica?

Costa Rican colón is the national currency, but the US dollar is accepted as well. Anyway if you pay in dollars, every shop applies its own change… so the best practice is to arrive with dollars and change them into a official bureau the change, or withdraw from an ATM (just check with your bank for abroad transactions, or use a zero commissions card).
